Chapter 22

Renée’s heart dropped. Finn? He was an agent for the FBI? Just her luck! She’d finally met a guy who twisted her insides into pretzels, stirred her desire for romance, and now she’d have to pass up the prospect. No way was she taking any chances, falling for someone who worked in the same shitty business as she did. That lesson had been drilled into her over and over again after watching her co-workers fight to save their crippled marriages.

The pressures of the job were horrendous. In fact, after the last case, Renée had been seriously thinking about whether or not she wanted to remain a cop.

“What the hell happened to your throat?” Finn’s anger broke into her brooding.

“You two know each other?” Jack seemed stunned.

“I’m fine, don’t fuss.”

“Fuss? Are you insane?” Finn exploded. “There’re distinct marks on your neck like fingerprints. For crissake’s, someone tries to choke you and you have the nerve to say, don’t fuss?” While ranting, Finn approached her swiftly. Reaching out with a gentle touch to the black and blue bruises decorating her skin, he searched her eyes. His were hard, angry… steadfast. “Tell me who did that to you and he’s a dead man.”

“He’s already dead.” She sensed when her answer registered with him. His eyes closed in acceptance. For seconds, the only noise in the room was the thumping of her heartbeat.

“Good work. He can’t hurt anyone again.” Finn leaned his forehead against hers as if in condolence. The gesture made her mouth turn even drier than it’d been when she’d woken in the hospital.

“I don’t know how you two are acquainted. I’m not even gonna ask.” Jack interrupted, his hands held up like someone had aimed a gun in his direction. “Renée, did you talk to your captain in the last hour?”

Renée forced her gaze away from the electric enticement of Finnegan O’Reilly’s blue shockers “No. I’ve been busy.”

“Well, she called me when she couldn’t get a hold of you. She wanted you to know that the autopsy came in. Seems your perp forced you to pull the trigger for a reason.”

“He forced you. How?” Finn questioned first her, and then turned to the man who was watching them with a disapproving stare.

Renée let her eyes reconnect with Finn’s. Her accepting smile was weak and she knew it. “His finger covered mine on the trigger and he squeezed.”

“Oh, baby, I’m sorry.” Finn’s voice, like melted butter, spread over her pain and coated it with a caring salve.

Jack continued as if he hadn’t been interrupted. “Payne Milner had an inoperable brain tumor. The medications helped somewhat, but his personality had obviously been affected by the pressure. Which explains why he’d changed over the last few months from being an ordinary young man into a psychopath.”

Renée heard the words as if from a distance. Pushing away from Finn’s gentleness, she staggered to the window. She needed a few moments to gather her emotions, adjust her backbone and whip up her pride. “He wanted to die…”

“Looks that way.
